The Greenman is an ancient pagan image, harking back to an age of 'Green' Magic. This figure emerges from leaves, is made of leaves, and/or has leaves spewing from an open mouth. The Greenman is said to embody the life force of rebirth. After the death, cold and barren of Winter, Spring returns and brings with it the Sun, growth and a time of plenty.
The Greenman is seen throughout the English countryside, on many ancient churches. In medieval times, life had few certainties and comforts, families longed for a good crop and bountiful Harvest, belief in the power of the Greenman may well have been too strong for the arrival of Christianity to suppress.
